Oral Exams & Cancer Screening An oral exam and cancer screening is a necessary and important part of your routine prophylaxis treatment (your preventive visit to the hygienist). During your checkup, Dr. Adriana Jaramillo will examine the soft and hard oral tissues for signs of: Tooth decay Malocclusion/bite problems TMJ (temporal mandibular joint) health Oral cancer Supporting bone and gum health Diabetes and other potentially serious problems Why are oral exams necessary? Your body and health are constantly changing. An oral exam is an important part of your preventive care. Dental problems do not go away without treatment, and in fact usually become more severe. A cavity detected in the early stages may not even need a filling, but left untreated can progress to stages where a root canal or extraction maybe your only option.
